After your anaesthetic has been given, you’ll be unconscious.
The surgeon uses a microscope to examine your eardrum, and then makes a small incision in it.
They then remove any fluid from the middle ear, and places a grommet – a small tube about the size of a match head with rims on either side – into the hole to stop it from closing.
This hole replaces the function of the Eustachian Tube (the tube that equalises pressure on either side of the eardrum).
