You’ll be taken to the operating theatre and made comfortable.
Your anaesthetist will insert an intravenous cannula into a vein to give you anaesthetic, fluid and other drugs. You’ll be unconscious or numb and sedated for your procedure.
Your surgery may be performed as a transurethral procedure (through your urethra) or as open surgery.
The time taken to perform your procedure depends on the size of your prostate and the type of surgery you’re having.

After surgery, you’ll have a catheter in your urethra and bladder. The length of time it stays in place depends on the type of procedure you had. (Rough guide: open prostatectomy 4–5 nights, TURP: 2 nights, Urolift® and laser: 1 night).
