Preparing forsurgery

Before surgery, your doctor may do a number of tests and examinations.

  • A digital rectal examination can help your doctor determine the size of your prostate and exclude any other abnormalities.
  • Your urologist may measure your prostate using ultrasound. It’ll help them decide which is the best approach for you.
  • The prostate specific antigen test (PSA) is a blood test that can identify prostate abnormalities, such as cancer. In interpreting PSA values your urologist will take into account your age, any urinary tract infection or prostate disease, recent diagnostic procedures and the treatments you’re currently having.
  • If you currently have a urinary tract infection or blood in your urine, your doctor will want to address these problems before surgery.
You should tell your doctor about any existing health problems and medications you’re taking (especially blood thinners). Ask your doctor if you should stop any medications before surgery.

Before your surgery, you’ll meet your anaesthetist to discuss anaesthesia for your surgery.
