HCF Research Foundation joins with RACGP to fund innovative GP research

Sydney, 1 September 2014 - The HCF Research Foundation, in partnership with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), has awarded $120,000 in research grants to two general practitioner researchers.

The two scholarships valued at $60,000 each, will fund research into primary healthcare and general practice with the aim of improving access to health care services and enhancing the quality, effectiveness and cost of care.

HCF Foundation and RACGP received 13 applications from general practitioners and general practice registrars. The two successful applicants are emerging researchers in the areas of chronic disease management and advanced care planning.

The recipients of the HCF Research Foundation/RACGP research grant and their topics of research are:

  • Dr Victoria Wade: Acceptability and Impact of Introducing an Online Software System into a General Practice to Increase Patient Engagement with Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Management.
  • Dr Joel Rhee: A Pilot Study of a Systematic Patient-Centred and Practice Nurse Coordinated Model of Advanced Care Planning in Australian General Practice.

HCF’s Managing Director, Shaun Larkin, said: “We would like to congratulate both Dr Wade and Dr Rhee on the quality of their research proposals. We are confident that their research will benefit many Australians in years to come.”

“As a champion of digital health initiatives and patient care, HCF is particularly happy to see grant recipients investigate new technologies and patient centred models in an effort to improve health management and the scope of health services in general practice,” Mr Larkin said.

The RACGP Foundation Patron, Professor Peter Mudge, said: “These research grants acknowledge the vital contribution GPs make to furthering medical advancements within the community. General practice research that involves GPs and patients is necessary to deliver the highest quality health outcomes to all Australians.”
