You’ll be taken to the recovery room.
Your doctor will come and let you know whether you can go home the same day or the next morning. If you’ve had keyhole surgery you’ll probably stay overnight until any side effects of general anaesthesia have worn off.
They may not let you eat for at least 4 hours after general anaesthesia but this can vary. If you've had local anaesthesia, you can eat and drink sooner.
You may be asked to wear compression stockings to reduce the risk of blood clots in your legs. Movement and deep breathing can help prevent clots, fluid in your lungs and pneumonia. The nurses may recommended you take 5–10 deep breaths and hold each one, once every hour.
While you may notice some discomfort, most people don’t experience significant pain following hernia surgery.
If you’ve had IV sedation or general anaesthesia, a nurse will remove your IV cannula.
